What does ‘LACE’ mean?

An explanation of yarn weights

13.03.2023

Lace is the category for the finest yarns. When we say ‘lace’ we mean that you would expect a 50g skein of yarn to have a running length of over 400 metres. Knitting a tension square with a lace-weight yarn should give you between 33 and 40 stitches to 10cm, using the recommended needle size of 1.5mm - 2.25mm.
The fine and superfine lace yarns can include merino qualities. More often, though, you will find fibre combinations involving the lightest, finest quality fibres such as silk, mohair or cashmere. These yarns can readily be knitted into lacy accessories, and are particularly suitable for luxurious designs with delicate filigree patterns. A lace yarn with mohair and silk may also be knitted together with a heavier yarn, to achieve a fluffy aura.
