What does ‘Superwash’ mean?

28.09.2023

Superwash qualities are wool yarns, which have been treated to make them machine washable. The yarns may be washed by machine at 30 degrees, without shrinking or felting. To this end, the wool is treated with various substances to provide a protective coating. Projections from the fibre structure are eliminated by this process. The surface of the wool fibre is smoothed by the Superwash preparation. This means that the finished knitted or crocheted piece cannot become felted in the washing machine, as the fibres are unable to hook onto one another. Clothing made with Superwash yarns have a softer feel and a sheen.

We recommend that Superwash yarns are only washed using the wool programme or delicate cycle, without fabric softener. In general, we advise you to follow the care instructions on the yarn label. You will find the care symbols explained here.
