What is a micron?

In the textile industry, the diameter of wool fibre is measured in microns (μm). One micron or micrometer is the same as 0.001 milimeter. The diameter of fibres of downy animal hair varies from 10 to 30 microns, so it is very fine. By contrast, a human hair has a diameter of 75 microns.
