Knitting with mohair from LANGYARNS

12.10.2023

All of our mohair qualities comprise only the finest fibres from young goats and are labelled Mohair Superkid. All mohair fibers for our mohair yarns come from Angora goats from South Africa or Australia and have a fiber diameter of 21 to 26.5 microns. Silk is the main component of all our mohair yarns, this enables us to offer a brilliant shade palette of over 200 colours, across our range. Aside from the natural sheen of LACE and MOHAIR LUXE, you will also find the same yarns in a LAMÉ version. Decorated with sequins or metallic thread, these classics of ours will add a glitzy accent to your knitting.

Tips for knitting with mohair

Mohair/silk yarns like our LACE or MOHAIR 21 knit up into the lightest, laciest dresses, sweaters, cardigans and shawls. Even pieces knitted in stocking stitch appear full of volume, cosy and warm, due to the fluffy effect of the mohair fibres.

However, it can take a lot of patience to make a shawl with a mohair/silk yarn. Knitting with a larger needle can not only expedite your progress, but make it easier to incorporate elegant eyelet or cable patterns into your project. The patterns will help your work appear more three-dimensional.

Mohair yarns are suitable for knitting along with other yarns such as merino or alpaca wool. The mohair yarns blend in well visually with the thicker woollen yarns, adding a halo of fluffy fibre. When mohair is used along with another yarn the garments produced are thicker, with a sophisticated sheen.

Mohair hardly leaves any lint on the surface of your knitting (no pilling). However, it is often the case that the long fibres can get trapped or tangled as you knit, so we have some tips for you:

·   Work slowly and carefully, to ensure that you insert your needle in the right place and take all of the strands with you. You will find that you still progress more quickly than you would if you had to keep reviewing your work.

·   If you do have to rip back some of your work, don’t pull too hard on the yarn otherwise it may knot. Undo one stitch at a time.

·   Smooth needles, without bumps or irregularities, are the best ones for knitting with mohair. This way the yarn won’t catch.
