The colourful raglan jumper designed by Carolin Schwarberg is knitted in rounds from the top downwards. This not only eliminates the need to sew it together at the end, but the jumper can also be tried on while knitting, so it is sure to be a great fit.
Materials
LANGYARNS MALOU LIGHT COLOR (250g for size M)
if your knitting is quite loose: circular knitting needles and set of double-pointed needles in sizes 4mm (US 6, UK 8) and 5mm (US 8, UK 6)
if your knitting is quite tight: sizes 4.5 (US/UK 7) and 5.5mm (US 9, UK 5)
it is important, that you knit to the tension given.
The sweater is knitted in one piece, from the top down – for the most part in the round.
Patterns used:
Rib: With thinner needles, work in knit 1, purl 1 rib.
Stocking stitch: With thicker needles. In rounds: knit all stitches. In rows: on RS knit, on WS purl.
Raglan eyelet pattern: With thicker needles, over 4 or 6 stitches.
Round 1: purl 1, go in front of the first st and knit the second st (both stitches stay on the left needle with the yarn in front of the left needle), then knit the first st (with the yarn at the back of the left needle) let the sts slip from the needle, purl 1.
Round 2: purl 1, knit 2, purl 1.
Round 3: 1 yarn over, purl 1, go in front of the first st and knit the second st, then knit the first st, purl 1, 1 yarn over.
Round 4: knit the yarn over of the previous row, purl 1, knit 2, purl 1, knit the yarn over of the previous row.
Keep repeating rounds 1 to 4. On every 3rd round 2 sts are increased, then on the 4th round these sts are included in the stocking st on each side.
Tension gauge (over stocking st): 16 stitches + 21 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”)
Instructions
Yoke: Cast on loosely with thicker needles (important: the stitches you are casting on must fit over your head): 56 stitches. Now continue with the thinner needle, knit one round of knit 1, 1 yarn over, alternately = 112 stitches, then work 7 rounds of rib. Now work one round in purl.
On the next round, continue with thicker needles and allocate pattern as follows (mark the beginning of the round = later the beginning of the left sleeve): *8 stitches in stocking stitch, 4 stitches in raglan eyelet pattern, 8 stitches in stocking stitch, 4 stitches in raglan eyelet pattern, 12 stitches in stocking stitch, 4 stitches in raglan eyelet pattern, 12 stitches in stocking stitch, 4 stitches in raglan eyelet pattern, repeat from * once more. Continue in pattern as set, after 36 rounds there are 184 stitches.
Left sleeve: Knit stocking stitch over the next 54 stitches (the eyelet stripe is exactly in the middle = 24 stitches in stocking stitch, 6 stitches previously worked in eyelet pattern now also in stocking stitch, the next 24 stitches in stocking stitch). Turn your work and knit in rows, increasing 1 stitch at each end of every row, 4 times, as follows: *to begin the row wrap the yarn around the needle and at the end of the row cast on a new stitch. Turn and make 2 stitches from the new stitch, then the same at the end of the row, work in this way from * until you have = 62 stitches (after 4 rows). Now work in the round again, knit in stocking stitch and mark the start (= actually the sleeve seam). Subsequently, on every 7th round knit together the 2 stitches before and after the marker until there are 38 sts, change to a short circular needle or double-pointed needles as necessary.
41 cm (16¼“) from the division, continue with thinner double-pointed needles and purl 1 round, then work in rib for 7 cm (2¾”). Cast off all sts.
Right sleeve: Knit to mirror the left sleeve, leaving the 74 stitches in between on hold for the back and front.
Back and front: Take the 74 stitches left on hold and knit stocking stitch in rows, increasing 1 stitch at each end of every other row, 4 times, from the stitches increased for the sleeves = 82 stitches (after 8 rows). Immediately afterwards, resume knitting stocking stitch in the round, for the front pick up 4 stitches from the stitches increased for the sleeve, then knit the 74 stitches of the front and pick up 4 stitches from the other sleeve = 164 stitches. Continue knitting stocking stitch in the round for 26 cm (10¼”). With thinner needles purl 1 round, work in rib for 10 cm (4“), then cast off all sts. Sew in all ends and, if required, sew up any small holes where the sleeves join the body.
